The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index was up 0.2%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index climbed 1%.
Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 5% to $99.24 a barrel, and the global benchmark Brent crude contract was advancing 2.5% to $97.12 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures fell 1.5% to $2.68 per 1 million BTU.
In corporate news, Kosmos Energy (KOS) shares dropped 7.2% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the company's stock to sell from neutral, with a $2.25 price target.
