S&P 500 Stocks: Complete List (2026)
Complete list of S&P 500 stocks in 2026, grouped by sector. Includes ticker symbols, company names, market cap, and links to individual stock profiles.
The S&P 500 is the world's most widely followed stock market index, tracking the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States by market capitalization. Maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, it covers approximately 80% of the total U.S. equity market value and serves as the primary benchmark for professional fund managers, pension funds, and retail investors alike.
What Is the S&P 500?
Despite the name, the S&P 500 doesn't always contain exactly 500 companies — the index is reviewed quarterly and membership can change. To qualify for inclusion, a company must meet several criteria:
- Market capitalization of at least $20.5 billion
- Annual dollar value traded at least 1.0× the float-adjusted market cap
- Headquartered in the United States and listed on a U.S. exchange
- Positive as-reported earnings in the most recent quarter
- Sum of trailing four quarters' GAAP earnings must also be positive
How the Index Is Weighted
The S&P 500 uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting, meaning larger companies have greater influence on the index's movements. As of 2026, the top 10 companies by market cap — primarily in the technology and communication services sectors — collectively account for roughly 30–35% of the total index weight. This means gains or losses in Apple, Microsoft, or Nvidia have an outsized effect on the index's daily performance.
Float-adjusted weighting excludes shares held by insiders, governments, or strategic holders that rarely trade. This reflects the actual supply of shares available to investors and prevents indexes from being distorted by companies with concentrated insider ownership.
S&P 500 Sector Breakdown
The index spans 11 sectors defined by the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). Technology and financials are typically the largest sectors by market cap weight:
- Information Technology (~29%) — Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Broadcom
- Financials (~13%) — JPMorgan Chase, Berkshire Hathaway, Visa
- Health Care (~12%) — Johnson & Johnson, UnitedHealth, Eli Lilly
- Consumer Discretionary (~10%) — Amazon, Tesla, Home Depot
- Communication Services (~9%) — Alphabet, Meta, Netflix
- Industrials (~8%) — Caterpillar, Honeywell, Union Pacific
- Consumer Staples (~6%) — Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo
- Energy (~3%) — ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips
- Utilities (~2%) — NextEra Energy, Duke Energy
- Real Estate (~2%) — American Tower, Prologis
- Materials (~2%) — Linde, Air Products, Freeport-McMoRan
Historical Performance of the S&P 500
The S&P 500 has delivered an average annualized total return (including dividends) of approximately 10–11% since its inception in 1957. This long-run figure masks significant year-to-year volatility — the index has experienced annual drawdowns exceeding 30% during the 2000–2002 dot-com bust, the 2008–2009 financial crisis, and the 2020 COVID-19 crash. In each case, the index eventually recovered and set new all-time highs.
Key long-term performance observations:
- Bull markets last longer than bear markets — the average bull market has historically run 4.5 years versus roughly 11 months for the average bear market
- Dividend reinvestment dramatically amplifies returns — an investor who reinvested all dividends starting in 1990 would have roughly 3× more wealth than one who took dividends as cash
- Missing the best trading days is catastrophic — missing just the 10 best days per decade cuts long-term returns nearly in half, reinforcing the value of staying fully invested
Index Reconstitution: How Stocks Enter and Exit
The S&P 500 Index Committee meets quarterly to review membership. Companies are added when they meet all eligibility criteria and deleted when they no longer do — typically due to falling below market cap thresholds, being acquired, going private, or declaring bankruptcy. Notable recent additions include companies from the technology and healthcare sectors that have achieved the $20.5B market cap threshold.
Index reconstitution events matter for investors because:
- When a stock is added to the index, every S&P 500 index fund must buy it — creating immediate demand that can push the price up
- When a stock is deleted, index funds must sell — potentially accelerating price declines for already-struggling companies
- Active investors sometimes position ahead of anticipated additions or deletions
How to Invest in the S&P 500
The easiest way to own all 500 stocks proportionally is through an index ETF or mutual fund. The most widely used options:
- SPY — SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (0.0945% expense ratio, highest liquidity)
- VOO — Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (0.03% expense ratio, lower cost)
- IVV — iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (0.03% expense ratio)
For most long-term investors, a low-cost S&P 500 index fund is the most practical way to achieve broad U.S. large-cap exposure without the need to select individual stocks.
